Bill received an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia. For the past 20 years, he has worked on a wide range of new product and new business development projects for the Building Products Division. His technical interests include mechanics, materials, modeling and simulation, data mining and innovative problem solving. His projects are typically fast-paced and exploratory in nature and often involve close work with customers and external experts.

In 1972 Grupe joined the Research Center of The United States Gypsum Company, and now holds the position, Director of Architectural and Technical Solutions. He belongs to the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings where he chairs a task force on high rise building movement. He is on the Board of Trustees for the Chicago Architectural Foundation, and is Vice Chairman of the Education Committee of AWCI, and assists CISCA, and a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council. Grupe holds a BSCE from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
