Artificial intelligence (AI) might still be a relatively new technology and facility managers are still trying to figure out ways to use it for their benefit when managing institutional and commercial facilities.
But the results of a recent study by Honeywell revealed that facility managers are definitely intrigued by the possibilities of AI. The company’s AI in Buildings study revealed that 84 percent of commercial building decision makers plan to increase their use of AI to operate their buildings.
Respondents indicated they intend to use the technology to improve their security, streamline energy management and integrate predictive maintenance. More than 250 facility managers and executives were surveyed for the study.
Among commercial building managers, AI clearly has emerged as more than an experimental technology and gone mainstream as part of day-to-day management. Other findings from the survey include:
- Nearly 60 percent of respondents already adopted AI to streamline maintenance and repair processes. One of the more popular uses for AI among building managers is predictive maintenance.
- Facility managers are using AI for unusual behavior (63 percent), location tracking systems for occupant safety (52 percent) and biometrics-based access control systems (45 percent).
- More than half of respondents (55 percent) use AI for building energy management. About 4 in 10 respondents use AI for water use and temperature comfort.
