AI to be Used in Demand for Clean Energy

AI is being looked upon to help the Biden Administration's goal of clean energy.   June 17, 2024

Earlier this year, President Joe Biden signed E.O. 14110 to ensure the Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). To help aid in this, the Department of Energy, announced a series of actions that will help deliver key elements. 

To kick off, the DOE issued AI and Energy: Opportunities for a Modern Grid and Clean Energy Economy, which gives a deep dive on AI’s potential to support the growth of clean energy economy. In addition, a new website will showcase DOE-developed AI tools and foundation models that are deemed useful for basic and applied science. 

The announcements aim to help drive advancements in AI safety and security, promote innovation and competition, and accelerate clean energy solutions to strengthen America’s global leadership. The DOE is utilizing its technical workforce to further carry out the executive order on AI. 

Meanwhile, the DOE will also assess the potential energy opportunities and challenges of AI in the hope of accelerating the deployment of clean energy and advance software and hardware innovation to manage the growing demand of the technology. 

This includes: 

  • The new VoltAlc initiative to use AI to help streamline siting and permitting at the Federal, state and local level. 

  • Deliver initial assessments on the safe, secure and trustworthy deployment of AI and launch a sustained effort to analyze AI’s potential benefits and risks for critical energy infrastructure 

  • Analyze potential for AI to improve planning, permitting, investment and operations for electric grid infrastructure and to support the clean energy economy 

  • Identify long-term grand challengers for harnessing the potential transformative power of AI for energy 

  • Conduct a comprehensive overview of opportunities and challenges associated with machine learning techniques and their applications in power system operations 

  • Establishing a new working group on powering AI and data center infrastructure 

  • Convene utilities, clean energy developers, data center owners and operators and regulators in localities experiencing large load growth
