Interest
in building information modeling (BIM) is growing among owners,
architects, engineers, and contractors according to a new report, with usage expected to grow rapidly in 2009, despite the economic recession.
In 2008, 45 percent of users report that they are utilizing BIM tools
at moderate levels or higher. Next year, 62 percent of BIM users report
they will use it on more than 30 percent of their projects; and nearly
half (45 percent) of all current users will advance to become heavy BIM
users (using it on at least 60 percent of projects), up from 35 percent
this year.
The report found that 72 percent of users have had at least a moderate
impact on their internal project processes, and two-thirds report that
BIM has had at least a moderate impact on external project processes.
Most BIM users (73 percent) are at least moderately involved in green
building projects and report finding BIM to be helpful with those
projects.
Companies that are tracking BIM value metrics claim returns on
investment as high as 300 percent to 500 percent through improved
project outcomes, better communication, enhanced productivity, and a
positive impact on winning projects, according to the report.
