Northern Illinois University (NIU) offers Professional Development and Training to help participants stay up-to-date on topics important to their profession. The courses are taught by skilled NIU faculty and professionals with real-world experience, and many are endorsed by professional organizations to help attendees gain necessary credentials and certifications. Participants can take advantage of NIU's nationally recognized programs without applying to the university. The courses are non-credit, so do not apply towards an academic degree, but do provide appropriate continuing professional education units (CPEs/CEUs).

Program areas include: Engineering and Technology, Facility Management, Finance and Accounting, Human Resources, LEED Green Building, Sustainability Training, and Online Professional Development. Customized and On-site Programs: professional development courses can be tailored for an organization's needs and brought directly to the workplace or hosted at one of NIU's conference centers in Naperville, Rockford, or Hoffman Estates.

Facility Management

As a licensed provider of the Certified Facility Manager (CFM) and Facility Management Professional (FMP) credential competency courses, NIU currently offers eleven different FM-related courses in partnership with the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), including the Sustainability Training and LEED Green Building courses listed below. Courses are open to non-CFM or FMP candidates as well.

Sustainability Training

This new section helps participants develop clearly defined processes, solutions, and strategies to meet their organization's sustainability goals.

Engineering and Technology Programs

The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology offers online training courses, corporate training and education services, courses for engineers and technical people, and occupational safety and health training authorized by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

LEED Green Building

NIU Outreach has partnered with Everblue Training Institute, a U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)-approved education provider, to offer a series of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) workshops, courses, and seminars. The program is designed to prepare participants to pass the LEED AP Exam, certify a LEED project, or simply expand sustainable building knowledge. Specifically, the courses prepare students to earn the LEED 3.0 Green Associate AccreditationLEED AP+ Specialty Accreditation, or a new non-credit Certificate in Sustainable Development.

NIU Sustainable Design and Development Certificate Program : this LEED certification program consists of 105 hours of classroom instruction that is broken down into three parts:

  • Part I: Introduction to Sustainability and Green Building
  • Part II: Green Design, Construction, & Operations
  • Part III: Elective Courses (participants choose from the LEED test preparation and topic-specific courses listed above)
