VMZINC: Company Receives 2 Metal Construction Association 2015 Chairman's Awards

Raleigh, N.C. — Oct. 15, 2015 — VMZINC-US, the international brand name of rolled zinc products, has announced that the company has received two 2015 Chairman’s Awards from the Metal Construction Association (MCA).

In the Municipal category, VMZINC received an award for its work on the Principal Riverwalk Pavilion and Pump Station located in Des Moines, Iowa. In addition, VMZINC received an award in the commercial/industrial category for its work on Adjustable Forms Inc., located in Lombard, Ill. Here's a closer look at each project.

Principal Riverwalk Pavilion and Pump Station: Initially, Substance Architecture designed the 1,950-square-foot Riverwalk Pavilion, shrouded in black VMZ ANTHRA-ZINC standing seam panels, as a stand-alone structure. However, designs for the pump station were created in response to the Iowa flood of 2008. The 3,485-square-foot station has a similar zinc skin that conceals pumps, valves, and generators for use during flood events. Completed in January 2013, these two buildings define the public plaza on the west bank of the Des Moines River.

Adjustable Forms Inc.: Adjustable Forms Inc. is one of the most advanced cast-in-place concrete construction firms in the country. Once the company had outgrown its facility, it sought to renovate and expand upon its office and warehouse, with an aesthetic that was a reflection upon the firm's work.

Zinc provided function and efficiency to different exteriors of the building. A high-performance rain screen system with dark zinc Dri-Design panels was used to bring a sophisticated contrast to the stark minimalist exposed concrete massing.

Also, a perforated zinc panel sunscreen system mitigates the harsh western sun in the late afternoons while providing a changing aesthetic as the sun moves across the sky. Zinc provides a contemporary look while being a green design choice, and the project is tracking LEED Gold certification.

The Chairman’s Awards are annual honors given to outstanding building projects involving MCA member companies. The awards acknowledge innovation and creativity, as well as showcase how metal products help achieve exceptional building designs. All of the 2015 Chairman’s Award recipients were recognized at METALCON, the annual conference and exhibition dedicated to metal construction products, technologies and solutions, on Oct. 14 in Tampa, Fla.
