Implementing LEED in Chicago K-12 Schools (1.5 GBCI &AIA hours)
Date: 01 Dec 2011
Time: 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Location: Daley Center, 50 W. Washington Chicago, Room CL115

Program Description:

Join the USGBC - Illinois Chapter's Chicago Branch for an education session on LEED & CPS Schools! Earn 1.5 GBCI CE hours and 2.0 AIA HSW/SD units.
The Public Building Commission of Chicago is implementing multiple LEED school projects, under LEED NC and LEED for Schools Rating Systems, Version 2 and now under LEED 2009.  Of the 37 projects certified to date, 11 are schools, and the 6 most recently certified LEED for Schools projects were certified at Gold level.

The PBC has an unusual opportunity and perspective on the relative considerations of implementing each rating system in terms of design considerations and implementation. The PBC also has an unusual perspective on the broader impact that sustainability can have, and the factors that must be considered when implementing LEED in a large program.

We will explore design strategies and decisions made in implementing LEED in an evolving prototype building program, with consideration given to  the rating system differentiation between LEED for Schools and NC, and will touch on how LEED 2009 has changed the equation.  We will discuss some of the practical design implications of implementing LEED for Schools and sustainable design in a large municipal program with its own established design guidelines. Post-construction and overarching CPS programs and their tie-in will also be discussed to provide a more robust understanding of what it takes to build and manage sustainable schools.
