Trane Light and Large Commercial Units Feature Single Zone Variable Air Volume Option for Increased Comfort and Efficiency

Solutions now provide more precise temperature control

Davidson, N.C. – Packaged light and large commercial rooftop and split system units from Trane now offer a single zone variable air volume (SZVAV) option for increased part-load efficiency and more precise temperature control for greater comfort. The SZVAV allows the systems to modulate the indoor fan and stage compressors as space temperature changes.

This new control option from Trane, a leading global provider of indoor comfort systems and services and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, exceeds California Title 24 and ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010 for reduced energy consumption when compared to traditional constant volume packaged rooftop units.

ASHRAE 90.1-2010 and California Title 24 require all constant volume direct expansion cooling units, which serve a single zone and are equal to or greater than 110,000 British thermal units (Btu), to have supply fans controlled by two-speed motors or variable speed drives.

Although SZVAV mandates focus on the energy savings available in cooling-mode, these Trane solutions also offer additional potential savings. Additional savings can be gained through unique customizable SZVAV control in modulating heating mode, soon to be on all models.

Trane now offers this standard, selectable option with the following products:

IntelliPak I (20-120 tons) and IntelliPak II (90-162 tons)
    Voyager Commercial (27½-50 tons)
    Voyager Light Commercial (12½-25 tons)
    Precedent™(3-10 tons)
    Odyssey™ Split Systems (6-25 tons)

“These single zone variable air volume solutions from Trane feature a fully modulating variable frequency drive with infinite stages for optimized part load efficiency,” said Shawn Wood, product manager for Trane. “Rather than set to a specific speed, the Trane unit will ramp at full range which enables it to achieve maximum efficiency.”

The SZVAV is also included as an energy conservation measure option on the TRACE 700 software package from Trane. This software provides a complete load, system, energy and economic analysis program that compares the energy and economic impact of building alternatives such as architectural features, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, building utilization or scheduling and economic options.

SZVAV systems are ideally suited for any packaged or split system unit supplying conditioned air to a single zone, including retail centers, schools, government buildings and commercial office buildings. They are typically installed in rooms that include: gymnasiums, atriums, libraries, locker rooms, auditoriums and conference rooms.

Systems featuring SZVAV include all necessary control boards and logic in a cost-effective, factory-integrated and tested commercial rooftop solution.
