ThyssenKrupp Elevator: Company Wins 2015 Tennessee Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award
Alpharetta, Ga. — June 15, 2015 — ThyssenKrupp Elevator’s Middleton, Tenn., elevator factory has received a 2015 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award (GESA) from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
The GESAs recognize exceptional voluntary actions that improve or protect the environment and natural resources with projects or initiatives not required by law or regulation.
ThyssenKrupp Elevator received a Pursuit of Excellence Award for the effort it made to become the only elevator factory in the world to receive LEED for Existing Building: Operations and Maintenance Gold Certification earlier this year.
To attain the certification, the almost 50-year old factory made upgrades to the HVAC system as well as lighting improvements which saved 3,317,684 kilowatt hours of electricity per year -- enough to power all the homes in Middleton all year long.
In addition, the facility increased the amount of outside air to ventilate the space by ~216,000,000 cubic feet per day.
Plus, it integrated efficient bathroom fixtures and native plants which eliminated outdoor irrigation and will also save 620,000 gallons of water annually. Ninety-seven percent of all waste generated at the facility is now diverted from landfills.
“Today’s award winners have demonstrated a commitment to our environment that will pay dividends for current Tennessee residents and generations to come,” Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said. “We want to thank all of the nominees for playing an important role in the continued health of Tennessee’s air, land, and water.”
“We have proactively taken the necessary steps to make upgrades that use less energy and water, reduce our emissions, and create a healthier working environment for our employees ” said Rich Hussey, president and CEO of ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas. “We strive to create a culture that fosters greener solutions for every aspect of our business, from daily operations to the materials we use in our products."
