Southco: Students Win Videography Award For Portrayal Of Facility

A group of students from Springton Lake Middle School in Media, Penn., have earned the Outstanding Videography Award for their short film on Southco’s headquarters and manufacturing facility located in Concordville, Penns. Springton Lake produced their video for the “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” student video contest, which is held annually by the Manufacturing Alliance of Chester and Delaware Counties.

The annual video contest seeks to dispel outdated views towards manufacturing operations with the goal of showcasing interesting and exciting aspects of working the modern manufacturing environment. Springton Lake Middle School was one of 13 schools participating in this year’s contest, which culminated at the awards dinner, which was hosted at the Penn State Great Valley campus in Malvern, Penn., on April 4.

Southco welcomed the Springton Lake Middle School team to the company’s headquarters and manufacturing facility located in Concordville, in late 2016 to begin filming for the contest. Using a GoPro camera kit, the students created a two-minute video highlighting robotic manufacturing, computerized monitoring systems and the design engineering process all taking place in Southco’s highly automated and clean facility.

According to Dream It. Do It. PA, which sponsors the contest, Pennsylvania has the seventh highest need for STEM professionals in the United States with an estimated 314,000 projected jobs by 2018. Southco shares the organization’s passion when it comes to changing outdated perceptions and attitudes towards careers in the manufacturing sector.

“On behalf of everyone at Southco, we would like to congratulate the students of Springton Lake Middle School on their accomplishment,” said Al Frattarola, director of global engineering and technology, Southco. “Southco has been a longtime supporter of STEM initiatives and programs throughout the Greater Philadelphia region and participates in apprenticeship programs around the world.”
