Skylight Conversion Kit Offers Improved Ease of Use

Tens of thousands of outdated, cracked, leaking industrial skylights sit on top Southern California roofs. Commercial roofers encounter skylights and smoke vents in desperate need of repair every day. This is an opportunity for roofers to increase revenue and offer new products to their customers. The tough part is getting building owners to buy-in.

Roofers occasionally retrofit industrial skylights, often with the same problematic system already in place. This practice is referred to as a Dome Only Changeout. Capless industrial skylights are notorious for cracking, leaking and pose serious fall risks. A Capped Conversion Kit mitigates all the inherent problems with Dome Only Changeouts.

Developed by Skyco Skylights of Costa Mesa, CA, the Capped Conversion Kit converts old capless skylights to a more trusted capped system. Instead of just receiving a plastic dome, typical with Dome Only products, commercial roofers receive (1) universal fitting Polycarbonate dome, (1) custom sized aluminum cap, and Tek Screw with EPDM Gaskets. The benefits are as follows.

Eliminates Leaking
Using a cap around the perimeter of the polycarbonate dome creates a leak free seal. Even wind driven rain will not be able to penetrate the skylight, a common issue with other retrofit options.

Eliminates Cracking
The custom fitted aluminum cap is fastened to the skylight frame with Tek-Screws instead of drilling through the plastic dome. Penetrating the dome with screws is a major cause for cracking.

Easier to Install
Drilling through the plastic is a delicate process. Many times, installers will over torque the screw immediately cause the dome to crack. Drilling through the Conversion Kit’s aluminum cap into a steal frames makes it easy to drill without cracking.

Over 400+ kits were tested in the field recently and these were the findings:

Faster installation compared to capless dome only version. Average install time for two installers is 1-2 minutes per kit.

Measuring certain parts of the skylight is quick and necessary. The polycarbonate dome is a universal fitting piece. The aluminum cap is built specifically for the skylight or smoke vent make and model. This makes for a much easier installation process and better performing kit.

Eliminates air and water infiltration.
By adding a cap the skylight is sealed off from any air and water that may pass through.

No exposed edges.
Covering the edges will prevent solar degradation of the plastic. Raw edges of acrylics and polycarbonates are vulnerable to solar degradation.

Commercial roofers are constantly challenged with giving their customers a superior product without sacrificing quality. This has cause Dome Only Changeouts to grow in popularity. A Capped Skylight Conversion Kit gives roofers a better option for value engineering problematic industrial skylights.
