Free iPad Energy-Saving App for Facility Managers

The first-of-its-kind interactive iPad energy-saving app for commercial property owners and facility managers allows them to precisely calculate how clean-and-green microturbines, solar PV, and/or wind turbines can help keep facility energy budgets in the black.

“CapstoneWorld™ 2.0” enables property owners, facility managers, government officials, and business people to quickly explore the potential to save millions of dollars on one of their largest annual expenses -- energy.  With just a few keystrokes, users determine how installing clean-and-green energy sources can slash costs and greenhouse gas emissions at power-intense facilities.

Within CapstoneWorld 2.0 are two interactive energy-saving tools: the Distributed Energy Calculator and CapstoneWorld.  (Examples of both follow.)

TOOL 1 – DISTRIBUTED ENERGY CALCULATOR
Quickly and accurately compares utility power costs and greenhouse gas emissions to those of microturbines, solar PV, and/or wind turbines for:
o       Retail stores and shopping centers
o       Office buildings
o       Factories
o       Universities
o       Apartment buildings
o       Single-family homes
o       Hospitals
o       Hotels

Example – Sacramento, California
If just 1% of eight Sacramento, Calif., facilities that use large amounts of energy switched from utility power to low-emission microturbines, solar PV, and wind turbines, the Calculator shows that collectively they could save roughly $10 million annually and reduce about 82,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

On a larger scale, calculations show that if 100% of the eight Sacramento facility types switched completely to the three clean-energy sources, more than $1 billion in energy cost savings could occur and carbon dioxide emissions could drop nearly 8.2 million tons each year.

TOOL 2 – CAPSTONEWORLD
Features vibrant animation of a large city and its variety of building types. Scroll over a building and users jump to a diverse collection of videos and case studies demonstrating how Capstone MicroTurbines™ lower energy costs and emissions at facilities and in vehicles, including:
o       Offices
o       Data centers
o       Wastewater treatment plants
o       Landfills
o       Hospitals
o       Manufacturing plants
o       Hotels
o       Retail stores and Shopping Centers
o       Universities
o       Apartment buildings
o       Single-family homes
o       Onshore and offshore oil and gas
o       Hybrid-electric vehicles
o       Marine
o       Solar/Wind

Example – Yarmarka Shopping Center (Ukhta, Russia)
It was easy for officials of the Yarmarka Shopping Center in Ukhta, Russia, to choose the new mall’s energy source. They could pay outrageous utility bills or install an onsite Capstone MicroTurbine® power plant and pay less than half the expected utility costs. Microturbines were the clear choice.  An added bonus: the Capstone system would allow for a gradual increase in power output as the new mall expanded and energy demands grew, thus reducing future capital investments.

Results:
o       The shopping center’s power costs are less than half of utility costs.
o       The CHP system generates nearly 1,700kW of high-quality electricity for the shopping center.
o       The 11 microturbines are the mall’s prime power source; no utility power is used.
o       2,330kW of thermal power generated by the 11 microturbines heats the shopping center and the domestic water supply.
o       The CHP system achieves nearly 90% efficiency.
o       The return on investment of the Stage 1 installation was just 2.5 years.
