Fire-Rated Air Barrier Can Improve Safety

A Class A fire-rated air barrier which combines performance and value in a liquid-applied fibered acrylic formulation will be featured by Kemper System America, Inc. (booth #38) at the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) 2018 trade show in Salt Lake City, UT, May 8-9.

Wall Guardian FW-100A air barrier, part of the company’s STS Coatings line, is designed to resist air and water infiltration, saving energy and preventing moisture build- up that can lead to mildew and mold. Compared to house wraps and mechanically- fastened weather barriers, the fibered acrylic can be quickly applied to building material surfaces with a heavy-duty sprayer, roller or brush, and has one of the lowest installed costs of any air barrier system in the U.S.

“While Wall Guardian has been in the marketplace for almost 15 years, there are still many specifiers and applicators who are not aware that a high level of performance can be achieved in a liquid-applied air barrier -- or the high potential for cost savings on a project,” says Jim Arnold, director of product development at Kemper System America, Inc.

The fibered-acrylic coating exceeds ASTM E2357 (Standard Test Method for Determining Air Leakage of Air Barrier Assemblies) with an air leakage rate of just 0.0004 cfm/ft 2 @ 1.57 psf – 100 times better than the test requirement. Notably, it exceeded the standard in a single coat at 40 mils wet film thickness (40 sq. ft. per gallon).

The liquid-applied air barrier offers unified substrate protection, even on curved or other unconventionally shaped walls. The water-based coating is a very-low VOC product and exceeds LEED qualifications at 25 percent recycled content.

In addition to Wall Guardian FW-100A, Kemper System also offers related air barrier components through its STS Coatings line. These components include GreatSeal LT- 100 polyether Liquid Tape for board-to- board joints, windows, doors, masonry, roof flashings, etc., and UT-40 Universal Tape for quickly sealing transitions, penetrations and seams in exterior substrate and insulation board.
