CertainTeed Strengthens Product Transparency by Certifying Industry-Leading Environmental Product Declarations Through UL Environment

(Valley Forge, Pa.) – CertainTeed Corporation, which recently issued the industry’s first set of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD®) for 19 ceilings product families, has further demonstrated its commitment to product sustainability and transparency by certifying its EPDs through UL Environment, an independent organization working to advance global sustainability, environmental health, and safety by supporting the growth and development of environmentally-preferable products, services, and organizations.

During the process, the life cycle assessment data for 19 ceiling product families was evaluated on critical environmental issues, such as production process impact, usage of raw materials and recycled content, packaging, health aspects and end of life impact—providing independent verification of the data in accordance with ISO 14025.

“With increased focus throughout the architectural and design community not only on product performance, but on how products are sourced, manufactured and eventually disposed of, EPDs are becoming an important tool for selecting products that contribute to today’s strict green building guidelines,” said Paul Firth, EPD program manager. “By publishing its EPDs through UL Environment, CertainTeed is ensuring that its environmental claims are reliable and visible to a vast segment of the green building industry.”

In addition to helping design and construction professionals understand the likely environmental performance of a building, EPDs greatly reduce confusion about technical information by providing a standardized format for communication of all impacts of a product or service. EPDs are also useful in providing details required in specification documents as well as product information required in applications for certification in global green building systems.

“With other companies just beginning to test the waters, CertainTeed has once again demonstrated its leadership in sustainable building by adding a second third-party verification of its environmental product claims,” said Dawn Chittick, director of marketing for CertainTeed Ceilings. “With EPDs published by two of the leading program operators, information on the life cycle of our products is more accessible to architects in a universally understood manner.”
