ADTRAN receives rebate from Tennessee Valley Authority using Trane solutions
Huntsville, Ala. –Leaders at ADTRAN, Inc. recently replaced the controls system in the ADTRAN East Tower building to improve overall system reliability, lower energy costs, and provide enhanced comfort for building occupants.
The controls upgrade implemented by Trane, a leading global provider of indoor comfort solutions and services and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, is projected to provide annual energy savings of 1.3 million kWh and earned ADTRAN a $133,680 energy conservation rebate from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
"The TVA required very detailed modeling to satisfy their verification process," said Greg Smith, ADTRAN facilities manager. "Trane worked diligently with us and the TVA to accomplish this unprecedented, complex project."
When ADTRAN needed to replace the controls system for its East Tower—and after a thorough assessment of the situation—they sought a replacement system that could provide the following:
• Integrate with its current controls
• Allow connectivity between existing systems
• Reduce energy consumption
ADTRAN selected Trane to collaborate with them to find the best solutions to meet their system specifications. Trane installed the programmable Tracer™ UC600 unit controllers and Tracer™ UC400 terminal unit controllers because they use a common, repeatable, consistent platform to provide greater flexibility. These features made them an ideal solution for ADTRAN’s special sequencing requirements.
The unit controllers are designed to work with the Tracer™ SC System Controller. With a complete portfolio of applications and an intuitive, easy-to-use interface, Tracer SC provides ADTRAN with a cost-effective solution for programming and managing building temperature.
Controls on chillers, cooling towers, variable air volume (VAV)systems, fan coil and air handling units, head pressure valves, heat exchangers, pumps and refrigerant purge fans were also upgraded.
The replacement of the building controls system at the ADTRAN East Tower building lowered energy costs, improved system reliability and now provides enhanced comfort for building occupants. The upgrade is projected to provide annual energy savings of 1.3 million kWh, even with additional power loads resulting from the relocation of a data center and fitness facility to the building, and the expansion of engineering labs.
