Automated Logic Awarded Building Automation System for PNC Tower Targeted as World's Greenest Skyscraper
KENNESAW, Ga. – Automated Logic (ALC), a leading provider of innovative building automation solutions that maximize energy efficiency while ensuring occupant comfort, has been selected by PNC Financial Services Group to provide the building automation system for The Tower at PNC Plaza. Automated Logic is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
The Tower at PNC Plaza is a 32-story, 781,000 sq. ft. office building that will be located in downtown Pittsburgh. The building is expected to surpass Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Platinum, the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC®) highest rating, and aspires to be the world’s greenest SkyRiseSM. The building will be the new corporate headquarters for PNC, one of the nation’s largest diversified financial services organizations.
“We applaud PNC for their commitment to sustainable development,” said Lauren Kolb, president, Automated Logic. “Automated Logic has been a proponent of energy efficiency and sustainability for decades, and we are excited to be a part of a project that could set the standard for future office buildings.”
Automated Logic’s WebCTRL building automation system (BAS) will ensure a comfortable environment for the building’s more than 2,000 expected occupants and will contribute to PNC’s LEED Platinum certification. The project, consisting of control and monitoring of more than 10,000 points, will utilize the flexibility within the WebCTRL BAS to integrate with many third-party systems, including lighting, fire alarm systems, indoor environmental monitoring and natural ventilation interfacing with automatic windows.
Since the tower’s sustainable design allows the use of natural ventilation systems to reduce the impact on the environment, the WebCTRL system will also interface with weather monitoring stations to detect external conditions, such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, rain intensity, and barometric pressure, and use this information to determine when to use natural ventilation versus mechanical cooling. The system will also connect with weather agencies, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and use local forecasts to plan future heating and cooling needs.
Construction is now underway on the project, which is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2015. PNC earned its first USGBC LEED certification in 2000. As of October 2012, PNC has completed 174 LEED® certified projects around the country.
