Luminaire Provides Broadband with Light Waves

Light Fidelity (LiFi) provides a broadband data connection of 30 Mb per second through light waves. Once an ethernet cable is plugged into a LiFi-enabled Philips luminaire, it effectively becomes a wireless router. The light starts modulating, at a frequency imperceptible to the human eye, sending data downwards. A USB access key plugged into a laptop or tablet receives the data. An infrared emitter built into the USB access key uses infrared to upload data back to the luminaire.
