Protecting Facilities from Termite Infestation

Rentokil Steritech, a provider of commercial pest control, shares tips on how to protect facilities and minimize termite swarms before it’s too late.

Termites are silent wood-destroying insects and just about every property in the U.S is at risk of termites According to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), termites cost Americans more than $5 billion in damage annually. They can be present for years without revealing themselves, quietly eating away at a structure.

The key is early detection of termites which can help minimize the cost of repairs needed to fix any damage caused however, identifying a termite problem can be quite difficult; but not impossible. Here are top common signs of a termite infestation:

  • Swarmers: Young female and male winged termites emerging from their nest to mate and search for a new location to start a colony.
  • Discarded Wings: When mated, swarmers shed wings near windowsills and doors.
  • Wood Damage: Look for hollow sounding or rotted wood. Wood may feel "soft."
  • Mud Tubes: Build mud tubes to provide moisture and protect themselves as they travel between their colony and food source. Often found near a foundation.

If there are signs of termite infestations, call a pest control professional immediately.
