Health Care Facilities Not Ready for Digital Age: Study

Health care facility power systems are not prepared for the digital age, according to a new study commissioned by Schneider Electric, healthcare facility power systems aren’t prepared for the digital age. The survey found 36 percent of respondents – who represent hospitals, health systems, physician practices and other healthcare facilities – reported their power systems were built more than five years ago – before the benefits and demands of Internet of Things (Iot) were known. As a result, these facilities are missing out on opportunities to reduce their energy use and costs, avoid costly outages and improve patient satisfaction.

Schneider Electric surveyed more than 150 healthcare executives and facility managers and found just 18 percent of respondents have implemented significant IoT-enabled and connected technologies to manage power distribution. Other findings include:

One in four respondents are not satisfied with their current power distribution system and cited concerns like energy use and cost reduction (23 percent), safety (22 percent) and power availability and reliability (20 percent);

  • Budget is the number one barrier to implementing advanced power technologies, cited by 47 percent;
  • More than half of respondents plan to invest in power distribution and management in the next 12 months; and
  • 84 percent cited patient satisfaction as a primary driver for investing in IoT and advanced power technologies.

The survey results underscore the importance of reliable power distribution and management in healthcare facilities and highlights opportunities to integrate IoT-enabled power solutions to meet key objectives, such as patient satisfaction, safety and power reliability.
