June 21, 2016 — Since the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) WaterSense program was launched in June 2006, WaterSense-labeled products have helped Americans reduce their water use by 1.5 trillion gallons of water — more than the amount needed to supply every household in California with water for a year.
Between extreme drought conditions on the West Coast and sporadic water shortages in many regions of the country, WaterSense and its more than 1,700 organizational partners have helped Americans understand the value of water and learn how to save it without sacrificing performance.
All of the more than 16,000 models of plumbing and irrigation fixtures that have earned the WaterSense label since 2007 are independently certified for efficiency and performance.
In addition to water savings, WaterSense-labeled products also reduce the amount of energy needed to heat, pump, and treat water — a total of 212 billion kilowatt hours, or enough to supply a year's worth of power to 19.4 million homes.
EPA also estimates that WaterSense-labeled showerheads, toilets, faucets, flushing urinals, irrigation controllers, and pre-rinse spray valves have helped Americans save $32.6 billion in energy and water bills.
In addition to products, WaterSense labels homes with water-saving features inside and out; a total of 246 homes earned the WaterSense label in 2015, which was nearly double the number labeled the previous year.
