Globe University Offers New Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering Technology Program
The mechanical engineering technology degree is a great opportunity for students who want hands-on, practical knowledge in engineering drafting, solid modeling, stress analysis, manufacturing processes and materials, and overall mechanical design.
MINNEAPOLIS; ST. PAUL——Globe University’s Woodbury, Minn. campus is enrolling students in its new Bachelor’s of Science Mechanical Engineering Technology program. The degree is a product of Globe’s merger with Northwest Technical Institute (NTI), a small private design and drafting college Globe acquired in 2011. NTI’s programs are being offered under the renamed Globe NTI School of Technology.
“Mechanical engineering technology is a great opportunity for students who want hands-on, practical knowledge in engineering drafting, solid modeling, stress analysis, manufacturing processes and materials, conducting experiments, machine design and overall mechanical design,” said Pam Schumacher, drafting and engineering technology program dean.
Graduates of the accredited 180 quarter-hour program are mechanical engineering technologists with job titles like mechanical designer, design engineer or applications engineer. Graduates are qualified to work on their own projects and accept more responsibility with higher pay, compared with someone without the degree.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the median salary for a mechanical engineering technologist is $58,000 and design engineer, $78,200.
The Globe program will appeal to individuals with previous course work or who have already earned a technical AAS degree. Both the degree and course work can be applied toward the bachelor’s degree.
The mechanical engineering technology curriculum has been developed in partnership with executives from local employers, who serve on a formal program advisory committee called a PACT. Schumacher said, “Close collaboration with employers ensures our programs attain high job placement rates, in some areas, nearly 100 percent.”

Pamela Schumacher, drafting and engineering technology program dean for Globe University’s NTI School of Technology, holds a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas A&M. She has several years industry experience working as an engineer for Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems and as a staff scientist at the University of Minnesota Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics.
