Report: Facility Management in the US Reached $271.2 Billion

New released study Facility Management in United States 2011 by Interconnection Consulting
Despite the economic downturn the US External Facility Management market reached new heights in 2010, totalling over 271.2 billion USD. Market value increased by 3.7% respectively compared to 2009. According to a recent study conducted by Interconnection Consulting an increase by 2.2% is expected for the year 2011. The highest increases were registered within the healthcare and government buildings by 5.2% while the transport and retail sector registered the lowest increases by 2.3% and 1.4% respectively.

The US is a mature facility services market. Anyway this sector is still taking advantage of cost-cutting programs. In order to reduce fixed costs more and more facility services like cleaning, catering or security are outsourced in times of crises. The share of total external facility services will increase from 48.4% in 2010 to 51% in 2014. This leads to a market growth of external facility services of 4.2% per year from 2010 till 2014.

The biggest sub-service of infrastructural services is cleaning, with an annual turnover of 65.4 billion USD in 2010 and an increase of 3.2% covering 46.8% of the total market of soft services, followed by catering (32.2%) and security (5.7%). In rough economic times catering expenditures tend to diminish, while security expenditures are increasing, which is confirmed by these figures.

The USA is a very attractive market for foreign facility service companies due to its immense size. Some European players took a major stake in the market by focusing on one segment, like ISS on cleaning or Sodexo on catering. In total 4 of the Top 10 players are European. Furthermore the market gets more concentrated. The market share of the top 10 increased from 11.8% in 2008 to 13.2% in 2010.

The challenge of facility service companies in the US is growing complexity. “Technical standards and complexity of business process are increasing in the US and more high qualified managers and a better understanding of customer´s satisfaction will be required” states Antonio Marques. Computer Aided Facility Management, increase training effort and a better understanding of business models is the key for success in the next years.
