Program Description:

Join the USGBC-Illinois Chapter's Rockford/Northern Illinois Branch for Sustainable Practices at Rock Valley College / Case Study and Building Tour of the Karl J. Jacobs Center for Science and Math.
With the Rock Valley College (RVC) Board of Trustees adoption of a sustainability policy and directive, the college has made a commitment to becoming a leader in academic programs for the sustainability industry, sustainable operational practices and construction of facilities that are a model of the sustainable use of resources.

An overview of specific sustainable initiatives and strategies at Rock Valley College will be presented by members of RVC Sustainability Committee.  Issues such as the development of academic programs for the sustainable industry; community and academic partnerships; operational efforts such as recycling, co-generation of electricity/heat and use of green power; and construction of all facilities to USGBC LEED standards will be addressed.

A case study of the recently completed 106,000 SF, Karl J. Jacobs Center for Science and Math (JCSM) will also be presented by Saavedra Gehlhausen Architects.  The JCSM is targeted for LEED Gold Certification and will be only the second Gold Certified Community College facility in the State of Illinois, RVC’s Physical Education Center, completed in 2009, was the State’s first Gold Certified Community College facility.  A discussion of the facility’s sustainable design features will provide insight into the design and the LEED certification process.  Site and building design features such as the restoration of native vegetation and habitat along Spring Creek, green roofs, use of green power, PV System, Geothermal system, Chilled Beam HVAC System, lighting systems, IAQ and recycling program will be discussed.  The presentation will be structured to provide the background and specific examples of LEED credits that will lead toward gold certification of the facility.

The program is intended to provide both general and LEED specific information regarding RVC’s Sustainability policies and recent construction projects that will be both informative for the interested community member as well as for design and construction professionals.
