School shootings are up across the country for a third straight year, and 2023 is on pace to shatter last year’s mark, according to an article on the website K12dive.com

According to the website K-12 School Shooting Database, there have been 306 shooting incidents at schools as of Nov. 10. With more than a month and a half left in the calendar year, that total has surpassed the 2022 number of 305. At the current rate, the final number for 2023 could be at least 360 shootings according to David Riedman, who founded the database.

The website reported that the database considers an incident as being anytime a gun is fired or brandished with intent on school property. While the numbers include incidents that do not include people related to the school, as what happened in Wisconsin in October when a man unaffiliated with a middle school was on the premises after school hours when he was shot by authorities after he shot at police.

Still, the records indicate that most school shootings involve people closely affiliated in some way with the schools involved.

“There are more people carrying guns than any other point in history that we know of,” Riedman told the website. “And that’s just leading to a lot of incidents happening in schools.”
