There are probably a few institutional and commercial facilities around the country with a security personnel member named Rob. But how many of those facilities’ Robs are a robot?

The tallest office building in Oregon’s security detail is aided in part by a 5-foot-5, 420-pound robot that helps keep the property secure, according to the Oregonian media outlet. The U.S. Bancorp Tower, a 42-story skyscraper co-owned and managed by Unico Properties, uses the robot as part of its security team.

“Rob” contains cameras that provide video surveillance, speakers and a two-way intercom system to allow security officers to speak with people outside the building. The robot can also read license plates, detect heat in objects and send alerts to inform when banned people are on site.

Personnel at security desks inside the building monitor the robot, which patrols the perimeter of the parking garage.

“Rob” is the first robot of its kind to be deployed in Portland, according to Unico, and is designed to act as a supplement for security teams and not a replacement.
