Over 60 Ohio School Districts Allow Staff to Carry Guns

2022 law reduced length of training time to carry on campus.   January 15, 2024

The Ohio Department of Public Safety announced that 61 school systems in the state have armed staff authorized to carry guns on campus, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

The latest of those schools, New Richmond Exempted Village School District, is likely taking the next steps to join that list. A major reason for the large number of districts allowing staffers to carry guns might be associated with a 2022 ruling from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine reduced training time for staff to carry from 700 hours to 24 hours.

The reduced training hours coincided with Ohio’s constitutional carry law taking effect the same day. To gain the necessary training, school personnel must take four hours of scenario-based training in addition to 20 hours of first-aid training, study of the history of school shootings and reunification education.
