No matter the size or influence of an organization, security systems at institutional and commercial facilities are always subject to cybersecurity breaches.

NBC reported February 27 that the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) suffered a security breach earlier in the month that compromised sensitive information.

A U.S. Marshals spokesman told NBC, “The affected system contains law enforcement sensitive information, including returns from legal process, administrative information, and personally identifiable information pertaining to subjects of USMS investigations, third parties, and certain USMS employees.”

The spokesman says the Marshals service “discovered a ransomware and data exfiltration event effecting a standalone USMS system” and became disconnected from the network.

A forensic investigation is underway, the article said.
