Lamar Consolidated Independent School District (LCISD) near Houston, Texas has integrated cutting-edge security technology on 24 campuses and serves as a model for other school districts across the country.

“There’s nothing more important than the safety of students, faculty, staff and guests on our campuses,” says Chief of Police Henry Garcia.

When exploring the best entryway security systems, Chief Garcia decided upon a weapons detection system with AI evasion capabilities and an integrated visitor management system.

“We wanted to know who and what is entering our buildings at all times,” Garcia says. “And if someone tries to bypass the system, we wanted to be alerted instantly. Athena offered those capabilities.”

Subhead: The Genesis of the Partnership

LCISD’s Safety and Security team conducted extensive research into various hardware and software solutions over a two-year time period. They wanted to be sure to source a system that could enhance security and curb the increasing concerns around campus security. Traditional methods, such as manual screening or basic metal detectors, fell short of providing the comprehensive security measures required to counter modern threats. After evaluating several options, LCISD chose Athena Security for its advanced approach to concealed weapons detection and evasion monitoring.

LCISD Chief of Police Henry Garcia spearheaded the initiative, and the district moved expeditiously to ensure the technology would be operational in time for graduation ceremonies.

Subhead: How the System Works

Athena Security’s Weapons Detection System combines advanced AI technology with intuitive usability. The WDS system employs AI-powered software integrated with lidar, cameras, and optional thermal sensors to detect concealed weapons. Unlike standard metal detectors, Athena’s WDS system incorporates Evasion Detection—a feature designed to identify individuals attempting to circumvent the screening process.

For instance, when someone tries to avoid walking through the system, Athena’s AI captures their image and alerts security personnel instantly. This “extra set of eyes” ensures that no potential threat goes unnoticed, even if officers are momentarily distracted. Additionally, the system is low-profile and non-intimidating, maintaining a welcoming environment for students while enabling a seamless flow of traffic during peak times.

Another feature is the automated testing capability, which aligns with Homeland Security best practices. The system tests itself to ensure accuracy and generates detailed reports, making it easier for security teams to maintain operational readiness. The process takes only two to five minutes and provides a centralized dashboard for monitoring multiple units across different campuses.

Deployment Outcomes

The implementation of Athena’s systems has delivered significant benefits to LCISD:

Enhanced Security and Threat Detection: By combining traditional screening with AI capabilities, LCISD now has a more comprehensive approach to identifying and neutralizing potential threats. The evasion detection feature has proven particularly valuable, capturing individuals attempting to bypass the system and enabling swift response from security officers.

Workforce Multiplier Effect: The system acts as a force multiplier by supplementing human efforts with technological precision. “Athena’s AI catches the things that we don’t,” explains Chris Ciabarra, Athena’s CTO and co-founder. This allows officers to focus on other critical tasks, knowing the technology has their back.

Operational Efficiency: The system’s quick setup and testing process—just two minutes—ensures minimal downtime and maximizes efficiency during events like graduations and football games. Its centralized monitoring capability allows for streamlined management of all 24 units across LCISD.

Community Reassurance: The presence of advanced security measures has reassured parents, students, and staff of LCISD’s commitment to safety. According to Chief Garcia, the initiative has been met with “overwhelming positivity” from the district’s community.

An Efficient Flow

Since its deployment, LCISD’s weapons detection systems have consistently demonstrated effectiveness. Because they are “hands-free” lightweight and portable, more individuals are able to pass through the system without having to stop to allow a security officer to search each bag. The walk-through detection systems save time and free up a security officer to engage in other critical tasks.  During routine testing and events, the system has accurately identified various test items and flagged individuals attempting to bypass screening. These incidents, while often unintentional, underscore the system’s value in maintaining robust security protocols.

Beyond detection, the system’s ability to document and analyze test results has enhanced LCISD’s preparedness. By automating testing processes and providing actionable insights, the district can ensure continuous improvement in its security measures.

Community and Stakeholder Reception

The introduction of AI-powered weapons detection systems has been a transformative experience for LCISD. Students, parents and faculty members alike have expressed appreciation for the district’s proactive approach to safety. The non-invasive nature of the technology ensures that it integrates seamlessly into the daily routines of schools without creating an intimidating atmosphere.

Chief Garcia emphasizes that safety is “priceless” and that investing in such systems is essential. The community’s overwhelmingly positive response reflects their shared commitment to fostering a secure educational environment.

A Vision for Expansion

LCISD is exploring opportunities to expand the program to other schools within the district, setting a precedent for adopting advanced security technology in education.

Likewise, Athena Security continues to innovate, refining and developing new technology to meet the evolving needs of its clients.

“Our goal is to not just detect weapons but to build a platform that adapts to emerging threats,” says Ciabarra. “The partnership with LCISD is a testament to this vision and a model for other districts seeking to bolster their safety measures.”
