Report: Gap Exists in Workplace Safety Processes

A new safety report shows a gap between a company’s intent to improve safety process and implementation of the processes to achieve safety.

Sphera, an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance and risk management software provider, surveyed nearly 350 risk, process safety and health and safety professionals. Results showed that while 75 percent of those surveyed said safety is a part of their organization’s culture, only 40 percent of those companies have a safety performance plan defined.

Poll respondents indicated that the top three key safety performance drivers are reducing operational and major accident hazard risk exposure (60%), regulatory compliance (48%) and corporate and board priority (37%).

And while employees have raised the awareness of safety hazards during the pandemic, not every business has gone “all-in” on the process. Over a quarter of the respondents, 27 percent, indicated that the adoption of centralized health and safety processes is lagging.

Additional insights from the poll include:

Main obstacles to delivering planned safety-critical maintenance and inspections: 51% say limited resources; 43% say conflicting priorities; and 31% say limited budgets.

A little more than half (56%) of respondents indicated that they still track critical safeguards and barriers manually, such as loss of containment and structural integrity, but only 19% said that those safeguards are monitored in real time.
