School Chooses Insulated Metal for Massive Re-roof Project

   Haughton Middle School complex in Haughton, La., had a standing seam metal roof that was not performing properly and the Bossier Parish School Board wanted it gone.
    When researching options for the eight-building complex, three avenues were considered: removing the roof and installing decking with a new roof over it; using a single-ply membrane system with insulation over the existing roof; and removing the roof and installing an insulated metal panel system. 
    After consideration, the School Board determined the insulated metal panel system was the best solution. More than 130,000 square feet of Metl-Span CF36R insulated panels were used for the re-roof project. The 2 ½-inch panels sandwich a polyurethane core between the interior and exterior faces and were finished in Cool Bright Red. CFR roof panels are installed completely from the top side with concealed clips and fasteners placed in the side joint.
    The design team had a previous successful experience with Metl-Span roof and wall panels on a Louisiana Department of Transportation building, convincing them it was a good option for the school.Other factors that contributed to the selection of the Metl-Span system were thermal insulation qualities and the speed and ease of installation. Factory cut panel ends, factory notching and factory swaged ends eliminate critical and extensive field reworking and reduce erection costs.
    School was session during the renovation, so it was important to minimize the disruption as much as possible. Installers tore off the old and installed the new roof on a daily basis and made it watertight overnight.
   The architectural design of the new roof was basically unchanged from the original, with quite a variety of different slopes to contend with and lots of details on the dormers. But the system achieved the desired design and performance.
