A total of $100,000 for green roofing and solar energy research funding will be provided by the Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress, a separate but related educational and research organization of the National Roofing Contractors Association, along with partner Penn State University.

Penn State University will use the funding for three activities: to take part in the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon, in which teams from colleges and universities worldwide compete to design, build and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered home; to test green roof specimens at the university; and to investigate the potential effects and respective market strategies for the roofing industry with regard to photovoltaic technology.

In 1996, The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress was established within the National Roofing Foundation (NRF) to create an endowment fund and provide guidance and direction to ensure that NRF serves as a highly focused resource for the roofing industry and its customers.
