Like other green building rating systems, RoofPoint functions as a criterion-based assessment system featuring two dozen roofing-specific strategies to reduce environmental impact. These strategies are assessed against defined and measurable goals, and the sum of the assessment is expressed as a total point score — not unlike LEED.
RoofPoint also can help facility managers choose roofing for their unique situation — providing guidance on topics such as how roofs fit into the LEED rating system, whether cool roofs are appropriate in cold climates, and which roofs are appropriate for photovoltaic installations.

As of this summer, the CEIR shifted the RoofPoint rating system from being a pilot program with voluntary submissions, to a full release of the guidelines.
The formal program started in July, according to Hoff.
Hoff and Silvertooth both realize that yet another set of guidelines for building owners to attend to might seem onerous. As such, the CEIR has attempted to make RoofPoint certification as simple and painless as possible.
Hoff likened it to a TurboTax-style system in regards to ease-of-use.
"We needed to make this an easy-to-use program because there's a real opportunity to recognize good roofing projects," Hoff explains. "Every year, about 40,000 roofing projects receive warranty programs from the manufacturer. To succeed at this, we knew RoofPoint had to be as simple as the warranty process to be included in all those projects."
Costs are also relatively nominal for recognition: Silvertooth says cost for submission, review by the Center, and approval is less than $250, and CEIR members receive a discounted price.
Ease of use and inexpensive were two motivating factors to streamline RoofPoint's adoption.
