Beverly Hills Paying Businesses $500 for Each Waterless Urinal Installed
August 7, 2015
As California battles through a historic drought, even one of the country's most glamorous and well-known zip codes — 90210 or Beverly Hills if you are not familiar with 1990s primetime soap opera — is also dedicated to the cause.
To help reduce water consumption, the city is offering to pay businesses $500 for every waterless urinal they install. The total is actually an increase from the $200 it was originally paying before state water restrictions went into effect.
A news release says that the money will cover the cost of the urinal and most if not all of the installation charges.
"One water-using urinal uses about 100 gallons of water per day in a typical office building," says Klaus Reichardt, CEO and founder of Waterless Co. If a facility has three urinals, that's 300 gallons of water each and every day that can be saved."
The release goes on to say that many luxury hotels in the posh area were using waterless urinals before the drought to offset the water used for landscaping or guest use.
