Dual-Flush Fixtures Part of WaterSense Program
The WaterSense program includes dual-flush fixtures, with an effective flush volume not to exceed 1.28 gpf. One flush option uses the full flush — 1.6 gpf or 1.28 gpf — to clear solid waste from the trap, similar to a standard fixture. The second option uses less water — a maximum of 1.1 gpf, which is enough to clear the liquid waste from the trap. Users do not need the full-flush option for every use and generally appreciate the opportunity to use less water.
These fixtures are best-suited for non-public staff restrooms, where the same building occupants use the restroom regularly and are familiar with the dual-flush operation. Replacement flush valves are available for the standard 1.6-gpf tank fixture with the tank located behind the seat. This valve converts the existing single-flush fixture to dual-flush operation, which helps reduce the cost on a light renovation and can qualify for LEED credits.
