The days of paints and coatings projects as run-of-the-mill tasks are long gone for maintenance and engineering managers. Advances in materials and manufacturing have added a series of challenges to the equation that managers need to consider when undertaking painting projects in and around institutional and commercial facilities.

Managers now need to consider sustainability, volatile organic compounds (VOC), surface types, job site conditions, moisture issues, and the effect of labor costs on projects, among other factors, when specifying products.

The new scenario also means no more “one product fits all” for projects. As paints and coatings become more specialized, managers need to blend all of these issues into an application strategy that delivers long-term performance.

“Paint has come a long way,” says Joe Kujawski of Sherwin-Williams. “There are more different, specialized formulas than there has ever been before for facility maintenance managers to consider. It really pays to select the right kind of paint for the project.”
