The last two decades have brought evolving standards and regulations related to paints and coatings, as well as new products formulated to meet those new standards and improve the sustainability of institutional and commercial facilities. Those two trends have combined to create a host of potential pitfalls for maintenance and engineering managers.

"It's an interesting time in the industry," says Tim O'Reilly of Behr Process Corp. "I'd recommend trying all kinds of products on small projects and see what works because the selection set has changed dramatically in the last 15 years and probably will again in the next 10."

Avoiding several key mistakes during the selection and application processes, and later the disposal of paints and coatings can help managers deliver projects that address sustainability.
