Key Control: Barcoding Technology Aids Casino Security

Barcoding Inc., a leader in supply chain efficiency, accuracy, and connectivity, has deployed its Active Asset Tracker (AAT) solution at Mount Airy Casino Resort. Using bluetooth low-energy (BLE) beacons and the power of the internet of things (IoT), Barcoding’s AAT is helping the Mount Pocono, Penn., casino enhance security and maintain regulatory compliance by preventing keys from leaving the casino floor.

The casino has stringent regulations and industry imposes hefty fines if keys exit a facility, whether accidentally or maliciously. To avoid these fines, establish accountability, and deter theft and duplication, Mount Airy Casino Resort turned to Barcoding for a solution. Comprising BLE beacons, a CloudNode, or smartphone and a mobile application, Barcoding’s AAT allows users to continuously and accurately track information about an asset’s presence, temperature and movement.

For Mount Airy Casino Resort’s implementation, Barcoding attached BLE beacons to each of the targeted key rings and installed a CloudNode and a stack light near the facility exit. When the CloudNode detects a tagged key ring in the area, the system turns on the stack light and sends an e-mail alert to security about the incident.

“Barcoding’s system was extremely cost-effective and easy to deploy,” said Lianne Asbury, director of security with Mount Airy Casino Resort. “We expect that it will help us avoid regulatory fines by serving as a deterrent to anyone attempting to leave the facility with a key, even if by accident. Moving forward, we hope to expand our use of the solution to generate reports for analysis and auditing purposes.”

In certain applications such as, Mount Airy Casino Resort’s, deploying AAT with BLE technology is easier, faster and more budget friendly than using passive radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The solution also eliminates the need for check-in/check-out systems that are often difficult to get employees to follow.

Tom O’Boyle, director of RFID with Barcoding, Inc., said, “While Barcoding’s AAT Solution is applicable across industries for asset tracking, our work with Mount Airy Casino and Resort demonstrates the system’s promise for the very unique casino industry. We are looking forward to seeing some great results from Mount Airy in terms of preventing regulatory fines and making staff more efficient, accurate, and connected in their efforts.”
