Hazmat Management: Review Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
Once managers or inspectors have located and inventoried chemicals, managers should obtain and review the products' material safety data sheets (MSDS). OSHA regulates the communication of hazardous chemicals in the workplace to employees under 29CFR1910.1200, the hazard-communication standard or right to know law.
This law requires managers to have a written program on chemicals used in the workplace. The plan must contain all required elements to comply, and it must describe steps the department or facility will take to meet the law's requirements for labels and other forms of warning, MSDS, and employee information and training.
