How the Refrigerant Transition Journey Impacts You

Tuesday: Sept. 6th 11:00 AM,   Summary:HVACR and industry stakeholders need to know about the transition to low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants and how it affects them. As some states are already employing the new refrigerants, it is critical to know the different types, safety classifications, and how they will be incorporated into equipment standards and building codes such as the International Mechanical Code and Uniform Mechanical Code. This introductory session will explain how the transition impacts industry stakeholders regardless of their role.

Learning Objectives:

  • • Purpose of the change to lower-GWP refrigerants
  • • Timeline for the transition to lower-GWP refrigerants
  • • The ASHRAE flammability classification system
  • • The similarities and differences between lower-GWP refrigerants and current higher-GWP refrigerants, such as R-410A
  • • Testing and research completed to support using the lower-GWP refrigerants, which are generally class 2L flammable
  • • The changes incorporated into equipment standard UL 60335-2-40 and ASHRAE 15
  • • The changes proposed and passed to the model building codes that support use of the newer, lower-GWP refrigerants

Speakers: Speaker Mary Koban
Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs @The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI)
Mary Koban has 25 years of experience in the chemical industry, with 15 of those years in HVACR. She received her MSCE in Environmental English from Ohio University and a BS in Physics/Mathematics from Penn State University. Mary served at the forefront of the automotive safe transition from 134a to the low-GWP, low flammable refrigerant 1234yf. She is currently working on the safe refrigerant transition in the HVACR space. Mary participates in several committees, including UL/IEC 60335-2-40, ISO 5149, ASHRAE 15 and 34, and is also a convenor of IEC 60335-2-104 and the ISO 817 Flammability TF Chair. She also serves on the residential committee for the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).

New Energy Efficiency Standards and Refrigerants for Residential AC and Heat Pumps

Thursday: Sept. 15th 11:00 AM,   Summary:Are you interested in learning more about the changing energy efficiency metrics and refrigerants? The proper installation of new, higher-efficiency ACs and heat pumps will be essential to ensuring continued comfort, lower utility bills, and environmental safety as they take effect.

  • SEER, EER, and HSPF ratings will become SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2 in 2023.
  • Equipment installation requirements will differ in the North, Southeast, and Southwest.
  • R-410a refrigerant will be phased out in 2025.

Learning Objectives:

  • 1. Understand upcoming test procedure changes for residential ACs and heat pumps.
  • 2. Navigate the metric transition in different regions.
  • 3. Learn about national refrigerant changes.

Speakers: Speaker Laura Petrillo-Groh
Senior Regulatory Advisor, Cooling Technology @The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI)
Laura Petrillo-Groh is the Senior Regulatory Advisor, Cooling Technology at AHRI. Mrs. Petrillo-Groh develops and advocates consensus positions among AHRI’s 300+ member companies on codes, standards, and regulations for energy efficiency and green construction. She is Past President of the National Capital Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and remains actively involved as a member of Standing Standard Project Committee (SSPC) 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, SSPC 221, Test Method to Field-Measure and Score the Cooling and Heating Performance of an Installed Unitary HVAC System, and Regional Vice Chair of Research Promotion (Region III). Mrs. Petrillo-Groh is a LEED-AP BD+C accredited professional and a registered mechanical engineer in California.
