Guide to Efficient Lighting Published by UC Davis

  February 17, 2016

A guide from the California Lighting Technology Center at University of California, Davis, provides guidance on selecting commercial lighting solutions that will save on energy use. Written specifically for the California market, which has the most stringent energy efficiency and environmental policy goals in regards to lighting, the guide can still work as a benchmark for facilities around the country.

The Lighting Technology Overview (LTO) provides overviews of commercial and residential lighting technologies and strategies, includes information on expected energy savings, factors to consider when comparing products, sample products, and case studies for indoor and outdoor lighting and controls technologies. The 2015 LTO is an updated version of an earlier 2010 edition, with revision focused on new technologies.

The guide focuses exclusively on LED technology. Products covered in the guide include omnidirectional (A19) lamps, directional lamps, linear LED retrofit, track lighting, recessed downlights, troffers and surface mounts, high- and low-bay lighting, parking garage luminaires, wall packs, parking and area lighting, and networked lighting control systems. In each category, the guide provides a description of the technology, expected energy savings, and factors to consider when comparing products in that category.

The LTO was developed in partnership with the California Public Utilities Commission and Lighting Action Plan stakeholders. It can be found here.
