Western Michigan University Relamping Team Brings Efficiency to Maintenance Department
Before Anand Sankey took over as director of engineering and maintenance services at Western Michigan University in 2009, his electricians spent too much time changing light bulbs. This did not go over well.
“I looked at their workload, and I’m wondering, ‘Why are you having this backlog of light bulbs and you’re not taking care of breakers, variable-frequency drives, or the other things electricians should be working on?’” Sankey says.
Sankey’s question produced a solution for the university’s maintenance and custodial staffs. In 2010, the staffs created a light bulb sustainability program that freed up electricians, streamlined the process for replacing bulbs, and improved efficiency in the maintenance and custodial departments.
The program earned Western Michigan a 2014 Facility Maintenance Decisions Achievement Award for Personnel Management. Click here to read the entry.
