Napa Valley College is seeking a General Building Mechanic in the Facilities Services department. Facilities Services provides maintenance and safe operations of the college`s physical properties, custodial services, and grounds maintenance.
The incumbent in this position will be providing and monitoring a variety of maintenance services with specific responsibility for identifying repair and maintenance needs; installing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading building systems and equipment; performing minor and major maintenance including emergency repairs; assisting other skilled trades; and ensuring that tools and materials are available at job sites.
This job reports to the Director, Facilities Services.
This is a full-time, 12-months-per-year, classified position. The salary has an appropriate placement on range 23 of the current Classified Salary Schedule. The salary range is $5,333 to $7,502/month. Placement is made based on experience. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
• Analyzes blueprints, schematics, and drawing of building systems for the purpose of determining efficient installation methods for new and upgrades systems and making appropriate repairs.
• Assists with performing routine and preventive maintenance as assigned (e.g. painting, electrical installations, welding, minor plumbing repairs, patch roofs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring optimal operation and appearance of facilities.
• Coordinates with assigned lead and/or supervisor and other trades for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.
• Inspects equipment and facilities (e.g. motors, pumps, fan belts, bearings, actuators, dampeners, air handlers, heat exchangers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring equipment is in proper working order and in compliance with regulatory standards and requirements.
• Installs equipment (e.g. fan belts, filters, couplers, bearings, motors, pumps, lamps, ballasts, drivers, relays, etc.) for the purpose of providing enhanced and upgraded capabilities.
• Maintains vehicle, tools, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.
• Monitors building systems and their components for the purpose of evaluating condition, identifying necessary repairs and preventive maintenance needs.
• Operates a variety of hand tools (e.g. drills, saws, pool equipment, etc.) for the purpose of constructing and maintaining facilities, furnishings, etc.
• Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
• Performs routine and preventive maintenance (e.g. replace fan belts, filters, couplers, bearings, motors, pumps, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the ongoing functioning of building systems, following all regulations and guidelines.
• Prepares building, walls, and surfaces (e.g. cleaning, sanding, patching, masking, nail holes, cracks, joints, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that they are ready for painting and/or refinishing.
• Prepares written materials (e.g. repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and conveying information.
• Procures equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items in order to complete jobs efficiently.
• Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items required to complete the necessary installation and/or repair.
• Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and making appropriate repairs and/or referrals.
• Transports a variety of tools, equipment and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
Other Functions
• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in the installation, repair, and maintenance on mechanical systems including HVAC equipment, low voltage electrical systems and plumbing equipment; handling hazardous materials; adhering to safety practices; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods, techniques, materials, tools used in painting; installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems/subsystems; plumbing installation maintenance and repair; indoor air monitoring equipment; interpreting resulting data; HVAC monitoring and response; review of blueprints and schematics; and safety, practices, procedures, and precautions.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; ability to read, write and communicate clearly in English; and demonstrated sensitivity to an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of community college students.
Responsibility:
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job`s functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization`s services.
Working Environment:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job`s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 30% walking, and 60% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to risk or injury and/or illness.
Experience: Two (2) years of job related experience within a specialized field.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Equivalency: Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area.
