Mind Carpet Installation to Preserve IAQ

air quality, carpeting   January 16, 2009

In order to preserve good indoor air quality in your facility during a remodel, take a few precautionary steps before installing the new carpet.

First, specify low-emitting materials, including all of the accessory materials, such as adhesives, moldings, base materials and cushions. Before removing the old carpet, be sure to thoroughly vacuum it to minimize airborne dust. Also vacuum the floor after the carpet and cushion have been removed to remove dirt and dust.

If at all possible, schedule the installation for when the building is unoccupied. Ventilate the area during preparation and installation. Continue to ventilate for 48 to 72 hours after the installation to flush out any odors.

It’s also ideal to keep allergy-prone or especially sensitive people away from the area during and shortly after the installation.
