Building owners and facility managers are facing increasing pressure to incorporate sustainability plans into their organizations, according to a recent report.
Greater energy efficiency, better indoor air quality (IAQ) and meeting environmental, social and governance guidelines are among the top priorities for facility managers, as a survey from Honeywell and Reuters revealed.
Nearly nine in 10 responses in the survey (87 percent) say that achieving carbon neutrality is either extremely (58 percent) or somewhat (29 percent) important in relation to ESG goals. The priority is essential, as commercial buildings account for 37 percent of global energy-related CO2 emissions.
While pursuing carbon neutrality goals, managers sound optimistic about progressing toward their goals. More than 90 percent surveyed expect to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and 62 percent expect to achieve the goal by 2035. Only 8 percent see no possibilities of ever becoming a carbon-neutral facility.
Managers who expressed concern about reaching their carbon neutrality goals were concerned about managing costs, a lack of expertise, or gaining support of leadership.
