Advancing HVAC Efficiency at the Phoenix Art Museum

Case study: ThermaClear treatment leads to continuous HVAC efficiency gains averaging 10.1 percent   April 5, 2024

Effective HVAC management is integral to achieving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring occupant comfort in commercial buildings. In January 2022, ECM Technologies collaborated with the City of Phoenix to address these objectives by treating the HVAC systems at the Phoenix Art Museum with their ThermaClear solution.

This article presents a case study of this collaboration, highlighting the significant impact on energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, and overall building sustainability.

Upon completion of the ThermaClear treatment, the Phoenix Art Museum experienced continuous HVAC efficiency gains averaging 10.1 percent, leading to reduced energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. As a facility maintained by the City of Phoenix, the museum's energy consumption directly impacts the city's operating costs and its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. ECM Technologies' ThermaClear solution emerged as a key tool in supporting these objectives.

Museums, with their specific requirements for preserving artwork and accommodating visitor comfort, present unique challenges for HVAC systems. Since the ThermaClear treatment, the Phoenix Art Museum has prevented the release of over 542,900 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents annually, significantly reducing its environmental footprint. Moreover, the treatment has extended the lifespan of the museum's water-cooled chillers, enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability.
