Manufacturer Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing is recalling a line of heat pumps due to a defect that can cause risk of excessive heat exposure. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall notice, a power interruption in the heat pumps can cause them to resume in heating mode, even though the thermostat is calling for cooling. This can result in excessive heat, posing a risk to building occupants.

The recall affects about 56,000 units with Daikin FIT, Amana Brand S-series, and Goodman SD branding. The units were sold at independent heating and cooling dealers between June 2022 and April 2024.

Facility managers who purchased a recalled unit should have already been contacted by the manufacturer for a remote software update for the units. If your unit isn’t connected to WiFi, you can contact the manufacturer for instructions on how to repair your unit.

This same manufacturer recently had a recall on similar units because the unit’s serial plate can list the wrong electrical ratings. This can lead to incorrect wiring, which may pose a fire hazard.

There have been no reports of injuries as a result of the issue.
