New Energy Label for Pumps Available

  August 3, 2017

A new label for pumps from the Hydraulic Institute gives information about a pump the same way the EnergyGuide provides energy savings on a refrigerator, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

The Pump Energy Rating label is the first rating to come out of ACEEE’s Extended Motor Product Label Initiative, which began three years ago. The initiative brought together several industrial motor-driven product manufacturers, their trade associations, efficiency program administrators and ACEEE to “develop new voluntary performance labels that will communicate the comparative efficiency of an 'extended product' comprised of a driven component (e.g., fan, pump, or compressor), a motor, and associated controls,” according to ACEEE in 2014.

ACEEE says it expects the label can be used as the basis of new prescriptive rebate programs, in addition to helping end users select systems. The Hydraulic Institute has also created a database with information on all tested and certified products.

In the future, labels are also planned for fans and air compressors, with a potential to extend to elevators and escalators.
