New children's hospital planned in South Bend

  September 21, 2015

Memorial Hospital of South Bend is building a new, 100,000-square-foot children's hospital.

Roughly 65,000 child patients are treated at Memorial Children's Hospital each year in some 200,000 visits. South Bend Memorial is the pediatric referral center for 28 area hospitals from throughout Southwestern Michigan and Northern Indiana.

The new construction comes after 14 years of planning and at the end of a nationwide children's hospital boom.

Nine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) rooms will have a bed and sleeping space for two parents in addition to the bed and medical equipment for the baby receiving treatment. Parents will be able to spend 24/7 with their child during their hospital stay.
