Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, Va., is planning a $22.8 million construction project to expand its emergency department.
The hospital's emergency wing is parent Inova Health's busiest, seeing more than 40,000 patients a year. Inova Mount Vernon Hospital's emergency department is 39 years old, officials said, and last renovated a little more than 10 years ago.
The emergency department — which will grow to 22,500 square feet — will have a fast-track area to handle less serious emergencies as well as more kid-friendly waiting and treatment areas.
The expansion is expected to be completed in fall 2016.
