  December 21, 2015

Florida Hospital North Pinellas plans to start construction of an off-site, 24-hour emergency room in Palm Harbor in January.

Florida Hospital is planning to open an off-site 24-bed emergency room in Palm Harbor, as well as renovate its current emergency department in Tarpon Springs.

"It is absolutely critical to the future growth of this hospital," said CEO Bruce Bergherm during a recent meeting with Tarpon Springs city commissioners. "This is important that the hospital continue to expand its reach so that it can compete in a very challenging marketplace. It provides greater access to quality health care."

The new $16.3 million emergency room will be about 5 miles from the main hospital. Construction is expected to begin in January, and the 18,500-square-foot facility is scheduled to open late next year. It will be full-service and open 24 hours a day, according to a hospital news release.
